How to Earn Rewards on Ad Buys: Points & Cash Back

As your business grows, so do advertising and marketing costs. While ramping up your digital ad spend can be terrifying– what if your target audience doesn’t respond?– when it works, there’s a hidden benefit. Not only can you bring in revenue from sales, but you can also earn points and cash back by choosing the right credit card to pay for your ad buys.

First, it’s important to clarify that the word “points” can mean a lot of things to someone in the advertising industry. Gross rating points, for example, measure the impact of a campaign using impressions as a percentage of the target population, multiplied by frequency. Nielsen uses GRP, for example. A point on an ad buy could also mean 1% of the spending on the campaign.

But here we’re talking very specifically about points in terms of credit cards used to pay for advertising and other business expenses.

The first decision you’ll have to make when choosing the right credit card to pay for your advertising campaigns is what types of rewards you want to earn: cash back or points are the most popular choices for most cardholders. The second question is which card offers you the best deal? And finally there’s one very important benefit you may not have thought about that we’ll reveal in a moment.

Reward Points on Ad Buys

There are a lot of credit cards out there that offer points on ad spend along with other business related expenses. For example, here are a few popular cards:

  • The American Express Business Gold Card allows you to earn 4X Membership Rewards® points on the top 2 categories where your business spent the most each billing cycle from a select list that includes U.S. purchases for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio). 4X points applies to the first $150,000 in combined purchases from the two chosen categories each calendar year, then 1 point per dollar. (Other purchases also earn 1 point per dollar.) Businesses doing a lot of ad spend may reach that limit very quickly.

  • The Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Card allows cardholders to earn 2 Rapid Rewards points for every $1 spent on social media and search engine advertising, as well as other purchases. Purchases not subject to higher points categories earn 1 point per dollar spent. Welcome bonuses can mean additional bonuses.

  • The Ink Business Preferred credit card offers 3x points per dollar charged on your first $150,000 of spending in specific categories, one of which is advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines. Purchases not eligible for 3x points will earn an unlimited 1 point per dollar spent.

Cash Back on Ad Buys

Cash back is a popular credit card reward as it offers the maximum flexibility. It’s hard to think of any type of business that can’t use more cash. Some popular small business cards in this category include:

  • American Express Blue Business Cash Card offers 2% on eligible purchases up to $50,000 then 1%.

  • The Capital One Spark 2% Cash card offers unlimited 2% cash back.

  • The Chase Ink Business Unlimited features 1.5% unlimited cash back

There may be other perks or bonuses that can make these cards more appealing. Overall, though, cash back rewards hover around 1-2% of spending and higher cash back tiers may be capped. While 2% cash back on $50,000 in spending sounds great, some small businesses and eCommerce advertisers can reach that limit quickly with just their spending on Facebook ads or Google ads– sometimes in days or even hours.

And here’s the problem you’ll bump up against, but you won’t find advertised: credit limits. Credit cards can be inflexible for businesses with high spending requirements. Even cards that advertise flexible spending limits will limit spending based on internal formulas, and advertisers may find their cards declined just when they need them most.

Earn Cash Back on Ad Buys with dash.fi

The dash.fi card is different. It’s the first card designed specifically for advertisers, and approaches spending limits in a unique way. There are multiple paths to determining your spending limit/creditworthiness so you don’t have to worry about card failure.

As for cash back, you’ll earn 3% unlimited cash back on your ad spend during the first 60 days. After that, you’ll earn 2% without any caps.

Spend $500,000 on advertising those first 60 days, for example, and you can earn $15,000 cash back. With those extra funds, you can test out new social networks for your ads, invest in new tools to optimize your social media advertising strategy, test out a new ad campaign to see if you can reach another demographic or raise brand awareness, and perhaps even test a TV ad. No matter how you decide to spend your cash back, you’re in control and you can choose how you want to use it to grow your business.

The Bottom Line: Why Dash.fi has the Best Credit Card for Ad Buys

In addition to the unlimited cash back you can earn with the dash.fi card, the biggest benefit is the fact that you don’t have to worry about advertising campaigns suddenly stopping because you hit your credit limit, or because the card issuer flagged your purchases due to fraud concerns. Additional benefits of the dash.fi card include no personal guarantees or personal credit checks, unlimited virtual cards, and the ability to freeze or cancel a card from your mobile device.
